After we got finished with Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks, we decided to go onto smokehole caverns. Smokehole caverns were used by three different groups of people. The indians were the first to use it. They used the caverns to smoke the meat of the animals they killed for food. The other tribes saw the smoke coming from the "hole" and therefore named the caverns the smokehole. The next group of people to use the caverns were the civil war armies. And last but not least were the moonshiners. Lots of history around here. For more infromation check out their web site: http://smokehole.com/caverns.html
The entrance to the caverns has to be
locked for obvious reasons.
This is what is called a column. A stalctite
and a stalagmite that met in the middle.
This is what they called an artesian well that
flows over a flowstone dome. The water comes
out of the ground, or the top of this flowstone dome.
This is flowstone from where water has flowed
down the walls of the caverns.
This is called a ribbon stalactite.
It is the Worlds longest stalactite.
